The Garamond type comes from a class of types first designed by Claude Garamond (1495–1561) for a French publisher and printer in the mid-sixteenth century. It was widely imitated and altered to suit the need of different publications. Over time, it became one of the most popular and ubiquitous of all book types.

The primary purpose of rounded shapes is to minimize sharp edges and corners without altering the actual enclosed content. The result is a more readable layout. When designing the round type, the shape of each letter was individually analyzed; there were hundreds of variations that had to be discarded before reaching a final version.
