It begins in Funtua, Katsina State, and flows through Gusau. Then it enters the Sokoto State. After passing Sokoto, it enters the Rima River. Additionally, the Benue River is the left tributary of it and flows approximately 870 miles long. Its drainage basin is about 123,000 square miles long and offers a significant transportation route. Besides that, it begins in the Adamawa Plateau of Cameroon.

It passes through Garoua, Lagdo reservoir, and then into the Mandara Mountains. After crossing Jimeta, Ibi, and Makrudi, it joins the Niger River. The Anambra River covers about 159 miles and drains approximately 2751 square miles. Moreover, it is a left tributary of the Niger River.

Furthermore, the Bani River is its right tributary and runs about 99 miles long. The Mekrou River is the right tributary of the Niger River and flows approximately 250 kilometers.  Moreover, it starts in Benin and defines the border between Benin and Burkina Faso.
